Earth Day as we know it is the product of an incredible compromise between the US Republicans and the 1960’s movements. Its creation is the embodiment of the moment when politics heard the hippie and environmental movements. 1960’s people became conscious not only of the harms of war, but also of the harms they were inflicting to their planet. Voices were raised giving Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat US Senator from Wisconsin, the idea of putting environmental protection in the political agenda. Thus, the first Earth Day took place in the United States, in April 22nd 1970, when 20 million Americans went to the streets. Such a success was possible because of a great cooperation between Democrats and Republicans, with Nixon as President, who that same year created the US Environmental Protection Agency.
