Half the Sky – Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, is a book by the couple Nicolas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. It tells the stories of different girls and women who suffer everyday in order to have a better life. Starting with girls which were sold by their parents, who thought they would have better opportunities, and who end up in brothels, being exploited, there are many terrible accounts. The book shows that these women were able to turn their oppression into opportunities, and flee their terrible fates. However, even these new opportunities are only half the sky, and do not seem enough. The book thus gives a great importance to microcredit, which is seen as able to setting women free, and makes the statement that investing in girls’ education can be one of the best investments any country can do.
