A Liter of Light

It is a given fact that sustainable energy is the future. But nowadays, judging from the price of solar panels, sustainable energy is still a good that is mainly in the hands of those who can afford it. Fortunately, human beings have an amazing inventive capacity, and some students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) discovered they could build a simple system of renewable, sustainable energy, that they decided to take to people in need. The idea is very simple, and the name of their movement has all its sense – “A liter of light”. You take a used plastic bottle, you fill it with water and a little bit of bleach, you put it on a rooftop where it can absorb sunlight, and it will transform into a lightbulb, that if well installed can last for 5 years. Students first used this technology in Manilla, in the Philippines, where millions of people still live without any light in their homes. The movement has spread, and many countries now have their own local
projects that build these solar bottles and take them to populations without access to energy. Check it out!
