“Desperate times require desperate measures” one might say, when looking at China’s most recent measure. The Chinese government has understood that its people are starting to get angry about the constant pollution, from the air pollution in Beijing to the green suffocating algae in the chinese coast. Therefore, the Chinese authorities have decided to take the matter more seriously and have allowed courts to give sentences of death penalty to the most serious polluters. The official Xinhua news agency declared that “In the most serious cases the death penalty could be handed down”. Despite the thousands of executions that are delivered in China each year, it is unlikely that this measure shall be regularly applied in pollution matters, unless courts are willing to take down many CEO’s. However, it is undeniable that China is trying to tackle the problem of environmental pollution derived from its unrestrained growth, and promises harsher sentences for big polluters.
